Sit back young fellas while an old man fills you in on a bit of the history here.
In the early 60s (1960s that is) I worked as a student with the IBM 650 - vacuum tubes, revolving drum, all the latest high tech developments. A red telephone to pick up if it looked like it was overheating.
Herb Simon and Al Newell, pioneering gurus of AI, were trying to get it to play chess. The program was IPLV ("information processing language 5, I believe). Simon predicted that by 1980 it would be world champion.
Well, we all know what happened to that prediction, but one contribution that the brute of a machine made to the world was that I and other students discovered chess.

I think you need to drink more bourbon or something strong perhaps?
My first forum post!
Anyways, battle chess for me. I still have the cd. I remeber beating level 1 finally and then level 2 after my yahoo experience. Level 3 i don't think i beat yet. I might install it and give it a taste of defeat similar to punishment it gave me years ago. Maybe i'll see, the colors drive me crazy though, red and blue.

A dangerous thing to say to an old man. I remember telling Paul Morphy ...
No, don't worry, I take my nom d'échecs seriously.
Chessmaster 4000. It's dead now, but now and then I wake up in the middle night and clumsily stumble into my bathroom to pee, and while I'm doing my business I glance over at the mirror for a second and then look away, then quickly my eyes widen and I glance back... and I can swear to you that I had saw it there...
