3 brothers wish to buy a pet dog,the sign in the pet shop window reads...pups for sale £30.00 each, they buy the pup splitting the cost 3 ways ie £10.00 each, the owner of the shop asks the salesman if they had paid cash,he replys yes,the owner says that they always give a discount for cash and sends the salesman after the brothers with a£5.00 discount,he soon caught up with the boys but a greedy soul he was and kept £2.00 back, giving only £1.00 to each boy, therefore each brother had onl paid £9.00 each so 3x9=27plus the 2 in the salesmans pocket=29....where has the missing £1.00 gone.
Originally posted by a winnerthe boys paid 3*9 = 27. The salesman has 2, and the shopkeep has 25. 2+25 = 27. What's the problem?

Originally posted by a winnerYes, the flaw in the problem is that you're double counting money. You're adding the 27 (that the boys paid and no longer have) and the 2 that the salesman has (also that the boys paid and no longer have), so the 2 is part of the 27, not separate from it.
wrong answer
To get the full 30, you need to add money that was paid that they don't have, and money that was paid that they got back, which is 3*9 + 3 = 30

Works best on your mates down the pub ... about 3 pints in when they are sober enough to think they have the answer and drunk enough not to. 😀
Common version is 3 salesman in a hotel, not sure about this puppy version. 😞

I believe the answer is that only one of them took one from the tree. The others could have taken an apple from anywhere as it doesn't say that each one picked their apple from that tree.

Maybe one took one apple, and four ones took one rock.
