Gas fires also run off cans of gas, i think it may be butane or something like that they use. But as it never said a gas fire connected to the mains you can not assume it to be so

if you can add 2 to 171 in the way described by bbarr, that is 17 1/2, to make it less than 18, surely you can also assume that 2+171 = 173 is less than 18 by alphabetical sorting instead of numerical sorting...
what gives us the right to make some assumptions and not others? the problem with lateral thinking puzzles is that the answer is always linked to the problem by some wholly contrived path of the author's choosing. there is either an assumed context or lack thereof: what a waste of effort even thinking about them. pooh. the authors would be better suited to inventing matchstick puzzles with which to amuse drunks.
