I am the biggest fish-shaped beast in the water, and I cannot breathe water - only air. Yet I am not a mammal.

No, I'm made of cells and I eat fish.

Whales are bigger than great whites in the ocean.

I'm stumped. I'm not sure there are any extant fish-shaped reptiles, and you used the present tense.

Well, present tense or not, there are no known animals (present or past) bigger than the Blue Whale so I'm guessing something's fishy here.

I'm being too obscure I guess. It's a fish in the Amazon. Fifteen feet. No other fish in the river is bigger. I forget the name.

It might be time to be a Fluke Orientation Pedant and point out that whales aren't fish-shaped.

That has nothing to do with ATY's statement regarding size.

CL: The thing is that if sharks are excluded based on being smaller than whales, then the implication was that he considered whales to be "fish-shaped", which is a vague statement by itself...

True. Maybe he means "shaped like some particular (oddly-shaped) fish". For example (although not a good one), maybe by "fish-shaped" he means "eel-shaped", and then the answer is "anaconda" or something.

I guess you mean the pirarucu. However, although this is an air breather (i.e. it comes to the surface of the river and gulps air), it can also breathe water - this is true of all air breathing fish. So the bit in the riddle about "I cannot breathe water - only air" is incorrect.

I didn't comment on ATY, I commented ChronicLeaky's posting. 😛

The point of my post was that the answer would not have to involve a size-comparison with a whale, because whales are not fish-shaped.
