A life lost

I read something from Alistair Begg that struck a chord with me; I am
paraphrasing him here.

We spend lifetimes living with the choices we have made. We have
built our lives as we desire, depending on how long we have lived
for decades, we reap the fruit of our choices. Yet, no matter how
honorable we have been, no matter how truthful, thoughtful, careful
to do the right thing for all the right reasons, if we, in a moment, act
on an impulse for lust, greed, hate, and such things as these, we can
in just one moment, destroy all, wreak our marriages, our families, our
careers, our reputation on and on to where we could lose it all.

Life can be ruined due to a single choice.

Very l true - I went to school with a really nice kid who did one thing silly which happened to be as a non armed member of a team that held up a post office, and off to jail he did go.

I don’t agree with the idea that one’s life can be ruined by a single choice, but if the person is surrounded by unforgiving people, perhaps that’s true.

Oddly enough, a chess game can be ruined by a single bad move unless it’s a game between two patzers.

Grace can fix many things, but infidelity, stealing, and lying when it matters can ruin
a life. Not all mistakes will/can ruin a life, but our folly can.

In medullah’s example, what if the guy got saved in prison? What if he led others to be saved? People can do good in prison and improve themselves in prison - look at Joseph in the latter chapters of Genesis.

I think your overall point is solid, but as an aside, Joseph didn't do anything wrong
to end up in prison or to get sold into slavery. I do think the original point is still
a good one, if we yield to temptation, it can destroy things we hold dear, even if
God turns it around; that is still something it would have been better to avoid.

I don’t disagree with what you wrote here. I was only disagreeing with the idea that a wrong choice can ruin someone’s life. God works all things together for good for those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.

I believe in redemption, grace, and God working all things together for good for
those that love Him. Yet, bad choices shouldn't be just blown off as if anything we
do will not matter.

I agree again, but I’m not blowing off bad choices - they can cause a great deal of problems and heartache. I just don’t think a single bad choice can ruin someone’s life.

I made a single bad choice to jump off the roof and deliver a flying elbow. I couldn't help it. Guy was just lying there; didn't expect a thing.

It left me quadriplegic and unemployable. My wife left because, well, you know, unmet needs and stuff.

But all is not lost because I have text-to-speech and voice recognition so I can drink from the font of wisdom that is the RHP forums.
