I want to add that, sometimes in the sharp glare of debate, it is not our “better angels” that come out. Happens to me anyway. But, in my almost six years on here, I have found many good friends among those with whom I have argued most assiduously (as a matter of fact, I can think of only a couple of tragic cases where it turned out otherwise—with folks who no longer post here, just so ya know—and I blame myself for them).
Anyway, I just heard from one of the people on here (who no longer posts, and has not for some time) with whom I had some of the best and hardest knock-down, drag-out arguments on here—arguments in which my “better angel” was sometimes missing—but who remained (and remains) a dear friend. We have sporadically kept in touch, and it was a wonderful gift to hear from him, and where his journey has taken him.
Argument is good. Even hard argument is good. It is honest. Argument in itself is a gesture of respect to the other. And if our “better angels” sometimes get chased away, that’s not a tragedy—as long as we remember that we have seen those “better angels” in our sometime adversaries, and the “worse angels” at times in ourselves.
Robbie recently drew on an example from Norse mythology: where the warriors who have been gathered to Valhalla fight every day, wounding and slaying one another—and then rise and retire each night to celebrate friendship and fellowship over cups of mead. That’s a pretty good myth, with a pretty good example for those of us who argue on here.
