It’s an observation about not regretting times in your life, not considering them as “waste”.

Makes sense to me, e.g., "without that, these other things would not have happened, or I would not have developed in that or those directions."

Off on a tangent or maybe out there in the woods, I remember a line from the TV show "Robin of Sherwood": "What is woven can never be unwoven." Not directly relevant, but maybe obliquely or coming back from a different direction?
