I would have thought you considered us the insurance agents.

BTW, there would be no 'modern world,' were it not the advance of Christianity throughout the same.

Thank you Crusaders for preserving all that knowledge uncovered among the Muslim heathens.

And thank you, Renaissance Man for never challenging the Holy Word of God.

Finally, to the great fathers of the Enlightenment, whose disregard for rationality and strict adherence to the scriptures paved the way for General Relativity, Evolutionary Theory, and Atomic Theory, we offer you the greatest thanks of all.

Your gripe against the various ecclesiastical leadership is over-reaching. Nonetheless, America was 'discovered' by Spain for the glory of God, at least in theory.
Just because some have misunderstood the Bible's teachings doesn't mean the advances are all moot.

Thus, the "at least in theory" disclaimer. Despite the atrocities perpetuated by church leadership, naivete of well-meaning but ignorant believers, or other imperfections readily witnessed, Christians have been at the forefront of moving civilization forward, as the message of Christ is spread.
And, while mentioning the failures, would someone be so kind as to recall the few good things which have come about as a result of that spread?

I think I just heard a pin drop 😉 Or was it a speck of dust landing in God's eye?

Seriously, though, Freaky... This continual prosetlyzing only exposes the underlying rot in the roots of the Church. Not - I hasten to add - in the roots of the Christian experience in the exemplary life of Christ!

Whether he lived or not is immaterial today, here and now. And it's not just the Christian church, by any means, that desanctifies the religious impulse. All organized religions do that by taking the individual away from their own personal experience of the immanence of ecstasy in all things.

By random acts of kindness, let us pray for each other... 😀

Good post. Just goes to show you what happens when man thinks he knows better than God how to manage His affairs.
Such is the scope of penetrating analysis, however, of the contrarians. No matter who is in charge, the scoffers will sit clucking their tongues at all the failures, all the reasons for rejection. Literally, the baby is lost with the bathwater... forget the fact that they are, in a sense, the baby!
I couldn't agree more with your assessment, relative to any group assuming to be the mouthpiece of God. Power corrupts, but certainly not only in religion.

It was usually uttered hastily in Spanish just before the Conquistadors layed waste to a Native village, killing most men, and enslaving those that lived (some of the women were put to a particular sort of carnal slavery. The Requerimiento is a significant contribution to theories of "just war."

It concludes:
...

If you do so, you will do well, and that which you are obliged to do to their Highnesses, and we in their name shall receive you in all love and charity, and shall leave you, your wives, and your children, and your lands, free without servitude, that you may do with them and with yourselves freely that which you like and think best, and they shall not compel you to turn Christians, unless you yourselves, when informed of the truth, should wish to be converted to our Holy Catholic Faith, as almost all the inhabitants of the rest of the islands have done. And, besides this, their Highnesses award you many privileges and exemptions and will grant you many benefits.

But, if you do not do this, and maliciously make delay in it, I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall powerfully enter into your country, and shall make war against you in all ways and manners that we can, and shall subject you to the yoke and obedience of the Church and of their Highnesses; we shall take you and your wives and your children, and shall make slaves of them, and as such shall sell and dispose of them as their Highnesses may command; and we shall take away your goods, and shall do you all the mischief and damage that we can, as to vassals who do not obey, and refuse to receive their lord, and resist and contradict him; and we protest that the deaths and losses which shall accrue from this are your fault, and not that of their Highnesses, or ours, nor of these cavaliers who come with us. And that we have said this to you and made this Requisition, we request the notary here present to give us his testimony in writing, and we ask the rest who are present that they should be witnesses of this Requisition.

This has surely got to be one of the biggest dismemberments of modern history. Do you even have a clue? Your historical reference must be limited to The Blind Skeptic and Rewriting History - 101 great lessons learned from Michael Moore. Truly, as Abba Eban so aptly said: "your ignorance is encyclopedic." If there ever was any idea in this post, it is in solitary confinement. Your jaundiced parroting of liberal propaganda has the appeal of a damp sponge; your one sided and selective distortion of history, the charisma of a leper. Like the strength of a solitary brick cannot save a poorly built structure, your sound spelling and punctuation cannot save your craven, incoherent ramblings. Your post has only one weakness -- it's insufferable.

1. Actually, if it weren't for the Crusades, you'd probably be praying to Allah about now (it's time for the Maghrib prayer).

2. "Renaissance Man" - any relation to the "Million Dollar Man"?

3. Who are these fathers of the Enlightenment you're talking about?

Of course. It was sarcasm, Hal. 😛

Edit: Despite its errant trajectory, your grand admonishment leaves me duly humbled. Still I wonder, why did you associate my post with leftist politics? It's true that I wasn't homeschooled if that's what you are insinuating.

1) Go Crusaders! If not for you, I'd be a Muslim fool instead of a Xian fool. Wait . . . I'm neither, so WTF cares?

2) No, I don't believe so.

3) Here's a nice long summary.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Hal, how could you possibly hold these poor confused folks to any standard remotely resembling veracity?
Surely you realize their quest here is limited to calling evil 'good' and good 'evil.' They engage in constant battles of one-upmanship, duly rec-ing one another--- even for posts which disagree with their position, simply because they sound so insulting.
If veracity were a desired ideal, instead of 'hearing a pin drop,' we would have had post after post of all the good which resulted from the spread of Christianity. Instead, we get the isolated low-hanging produce of intellectual-wannabes.
Historians? More like histronics.
