When is it okay to break this commandment?

Abortion?
War?
Self defense?

Does our society rationalize killing to make it okay, despite what the Bible says?

Jesus went as far as saying hate in your heart.

Self-defense is not murder, so scratch that one.
Killing someone in an opposing army is a huge grey area with endless context and nuance

Does the Bible, or God, give wiggle room for this 'grey area', or is killing just wrong, as stated in the commandment, and it's society rationalizing to justify it?

And abortion?
Biblically wrong or women's rights?

The Bible is what it is. The Bible is steeped in metaphor, is widely open to interpretation and contains inconsistencies, discrepancies and outright contradictions. As such, there is no alternative to picking and choosing what parts to believe. Those who claim that they do not pick and choose are disingenuous at best. In effect, they use the Bible to create God in their own image.

I can understand your point.

After that commandment was given, there's endless war and killing laid out in the Bible, seemingly okay with God, with God choosing a side to win.

By contrast the gospel preached by Jesus during His ministry, by and large is reasonably sound and reasonably coherent within itself.

I left abortion off my commentary because it belongs on the no-no list imo

Don't do anything I wouldn't ... unless you can do it very well."

I think this sums it up for me

It's funny that throughout history both sides have prayed to god for victory, read
prayers over their dead and generally celebrated the brave going to heaven.

It's almost as if religions were created by authority for the purpose of war .... 😀

No due process? Are you sure? And what would be the purpose of torturing them?

What torture?

Are we back to the tired "God tortures people" tripe?

You know the position is clear:

- Justice is meted out.
- Some people, due to their own actions, receive punishment.

Are you suggesting that negative actions do not deserve negative consequences?
