To put it simply, human embryos have a tail which measures about 1/6 of their length. As the embryo develops to a fetus, the tail is absorbed by the body, though some traces remain even in grown adults. Ocassionally, a child is born with a "soft tail", which is usually removed shortly at birth.
I myself have known several individuals who have had this when they were born, including one of my inlaws.
