I've not been round here much this year as I've been training for IMUK which happens this weekend.

I'm race # 1272 and my progress can be tracked at www.ironmanlive.com from 6am BST on Sun 7th if you're interested in following progress.

Edit - anyone else doing this? Slim chance, but good luck if so!

I'm betting it wasn't worth it.

Christ, I'll say it again: YOUR CRAZY!

From the site:
CUT OFF TIME: Swim 3.5 hours. Bike 22hrs. Total time 35 hours.
Good god, so there are some people who murder themselves after training for years and then they get told to go home, because they have been swimming and riding for just a tad more than a DAY?

Also, the prizes seem disproportionate:

ENTRY FEE: Individual - £220.00 GBP (plus Active Europe commission)
AWARDS: Finishing polo-shirts and medals to all competitors.
PRIZE MONEY Individual:

Overall Men

1st Place: £300.00 GBP
2nd Place: £200.00 GBP
3rd Place: £100.00 GBP

Jeez, can't these guys get any sponsors?

I think those are just the maximum possible times (cut-off), i.e. if they are still biking after 22 hours their race ends. I hope for HIM SANITY!

The guys who do the double IM are awesome... I rode up there to watch this years race (multi-tasking by combining a long training day with supporting another event). It's all about pacing and nutrition at that point, my club member who took part was in 3rd place after the bike but hadn't eaten enough so really suffered on the run - it was difficult to watch, however he did finish and will be back to do it better in another year.

The winner is a very focused athlete - he did it in 21hrs. Thats 2 back to back 10.5 hr IM races. Awesome.

I don't think any athlete missed the cutoff in this years race, but some did take almost the full 35 hrs to reach the finish. Anyone taking part is sensible enough to call it a day when it'd be clear a cutoff couldn't be reached (you'd know a long time beforehand by looking at average pace data) and save themselves for another day (year?).

If the double looks hard... consider this beauty:

http://www.decaironuk.com/

AFAIK it has been put back another year to 2010 so you've all got plenty of time to train up for it.

Safe to say, I won't be doing either the Double or the Deca for the forseeable future. I'd never say never though. 😉

Edit - re sponsors / prize money, it's not about the money to these guys, it can't be, otherwise they'd have gone and done something easier like fanny around on a football pitch for 90 mins each week for £1000 per minute 😉

A friend of mine is hoping to enter something like that in Brazil next year. She reckons the race will take about 5 days or so.

She just finished second in a 30 hour event in Ireland. It involved rock climbing and cross country and other disciplines.

Haven't a clue what they're called though.

Hell, the only thing I can imagine being a worse way to spend my time than actually doing a double IM is watching one in progress...

A bunch of emaciated athletes trying to NOT DIE as they sweat out the equivalent amount of calories that could feed a small African village for a week. No thanks!
