What makes it worse is, that it wasn't just Henry that hand balled. There were two blatant handballs in that play, and the ref and the linesmen were totally oblivious. The first handball was up in the air, and in the sight of all, then Henry patted the ball in play. . .The Ref and the linesman should be sacked for being too stupid to do their job.
why blame the REF all the time? Its the players who CHEAT- how about telling the players NOT TO CHEAT and be decent human beings?
Lets not forget- without match officials there is no match!!
FIFA need to make example of players who 'cheat' like this. get one of them banned for 10 games after video evidence then lets see what happens
Originally posted by spurs73I certainly wouldn't fancy playing cards with Maradonna and Henry . Cards up sleeves , winks and nods to each other .

So, the Irish FA want to ask FIFA if they can replay the match. I wonder how far they'll get with that? About.... this far.
This is how they react to to a referee mistake going the other way:
Nothing! And yes that changed that game too, and yes it might have changed the ending in the group like they might have won the game against France. Rematch?!?

The ref and linesman just didn't see it. I listened to the match on radio and the commentators hadn't seen much either until they saw the replay.

Fifa is corrupt. I've been saying here for...well a long time. There is so much at stake, so much money and big business - Fifa cannot afford to have France out of the World Cup. It will out one day - you'll see.Conspiracy theory ninsens
Originally posted by knightmeisterThere is absolutely no doubt the change of rules midway through the competition was to favour certain teams. In that, FIFA can fairly be accused of rigging, and so devaluing, the competition.

I don't believe that FIFA's corruption at the top influenced the officials in a negative way towards Ireland in the tie.

As everybody admits, people miss things in football. If a ref gives a penalty, and you as a player don't know what's going on, then you're not going to start asking questions if the decision is for you. You'll just assume you missed something.
A player deliberately and obviosuly cheating is a total different matter.
Never mind how important the particular decision was. I find it hard to understand people, like youself, who prefer to be cynical. It would be much more constructive to acknwledge the size of the mistake, and support a system to prevent these things happening again.
There is more than just a game at stake. Competing in a World Cup would be huge for Ireland at the moment. Our youth game is poor, but the WC would provide the impetus for thousands of kids to go down the park and play. Instead, we have a summer of recession, corrupt politicians/banks and increasing childhood obesity to look forward to.
