What have the Pirates done in terms of acquiring more help? As for the Reds, they have already reinforced their bull pen, which is their strength, by attaining the Royals closer as well as Masaat coming off the DL with a fresh arm. With such talent, they have effectively shortened each game by about 3 or 4 innings.
And they have gone on a winning streak ever since they lost the best hitter in baseball.
What does that tell you?
Pirates added Wandy Rodriquez, Travis Snyder, Gabby Sanchez and Chad Qualls, and spent very little to acquire them. Wandy strengthens the starting pitching, he should do well in PNC park. Snyder and Sanchez strengthen the bench, but Snyder looks to be the everyday RFer. All they gave up for Snyder was (Lincoln), a minor league suspect and the lottery draft pick. Qualls hopefully will fill Lincoln's spot in the pen. All in all I think they strengthen the team and didn't over spend like a lot of teams did this year.

Originally posted by no1marauderlol...I didn't ask you to be impressed did I? Snyder and Sanchez are both young and if they develop will help the Pirates in coming seasons. No the Pirates didn't get any "big name rental player" but I think they improved the team. I think a lot of teams overpaid for marginal talent this year, only because of the extra wildcard.

Gaby Sanchez isn't very young (he'll be 29 in September) and his slash line of .260/.334/.421 is about average for a NL 1B except his SLG is 20 points lower. Playing him instead of Garrett Jones looks like a downgrade (unless Jones is hurt).
EDIT: I guess they could platoon; Jones hits lefties to the tune of .200/.236/.367 over his career.

Snyder "could" turn out to be our redemption for trading Bautista to the Jays! Bautista had similar numbers when the Pirates traded him away. As for Snyder's defense, prior to the trades and the call up of Marte, the Pirates would sometimes use 2 infielders in the corner outfield spots, or light hitting Presley and Jones. Jones outfield play is well below that of Snyder's. Even with all that the Pirates are still in the race. So, I will maintain my position that the Pirates have improved themselves. Will they overtake the Reds?...who knows. Will they get a wildcard spot?...who knows, still almost 2 months of ball to be played. The one thing I am certain of, is, that barring a monumental collapse the Pirates will have their first winning season in 19 years.

You are correct that Jones and Sanchez will platoon at first, with Jones getting the majority of playing time. Jones has hit left handers better this year, even has a couple dingers against them. And Sanchez is an upgrade over McGahee, who continues to try and pull everything and only succeeds in grounding weakly to the left side of the infield.

Silliest looking thing on a baseball field. Besides, Hanrahan is not my idea of a good closer. But at least he doesn't consort with married women when he's in Pittsburgh. That puts him up in my opinion on some other closers.

Still, the Bucs are looking more like a baseball team this season. We will see. Makes it exciting again, after 20 years. Just wish they'd get rid of those announcers, so I could leave the sound on.

When you consistently post below average numbers on a good hitting team as Snider has done, management is reluctant to hand you an everyday starting job. I think the chances that Travis Snider is going to start hitting like Jose Bautista are infinitesimal.

In a game with playoff intensity filled with sparkling defensive plays, the Reds beat the Pirates 3-0. Latos went 7 1/3 scoreless AND hit a 2 run HR and Heisey had an inside the park homer. One lefty Garrett Jones doesn't look like he can hit is Aroldis Chapman, who threw 3 100 MPH fastballs by him to get the final out.
