I am sorry about the outcome for your team.Too bad soccer has sorriest refs calling games or outcome might have been different since they would have had Germany on the ropes. Germany looked shell shocked at that point and were lucky to go to break still up 2-1.

Mexico had a sorry strategy, hack away! If your coaching mind cannot produce better than that then absolutely do not deserve to win! Aguirre thought he'd hack Argentina into submission. Small minded petty Mexican players went along with this sorry strategy instead of attempting to score goals. Not gonna win many games that way!
because I like it when the better team wins.
I dont like underdogs.
The only underdogs i like is Fresno State men bulldog baseball.

I will say I've always loved your bulldogs. Great emblem on helmets! But we digress. WC is about scoring goals. Mexico had few chances, created little danger and seems to like to moan instead of picking itself off the carpet and swinging back (except at opponent's legs). That display right after half time was shameful! They were lucky they did ont get a couple of sendoffs after accosting the ref.

Originally posted by trev33What can I say? It's a long story. My dad loved the Yankees. I grew up surrounded by Yankees this, Yankees that. Texas had no BB team back then, at least not in Big D. However, I also love the Red Sox and rooted for them in that great and historic comeback of 2004. I'm sure my father, watching from heaven, also rooted for the Red Sox in that one. I could sense it! I love NYC. I would love to live in NYC and have their great opera season! Also love Chicago's teams. Since Texas Rangers fizzle about mid July, gotta put support behind another team. However, rooted for Texas when Yankees and Texas played in their one post-season series against one another!

Originally posted by hopscotchI think it's undisputable that they underperformed. So it's more about getting the performance that reflects their domestic and continental form.
That "golden generation" stuff is just lowbrow English media hype and nonsense. Milner, James, Defoe, SWP, Heskey... not golden. Bronze maybe.
Sure, they are not Brazil or Argentina but did England ever compare in terms of individuals? I think England has 4/5 top players and a decent support cast. Germany is the same, not really better. Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard and Cole (some might add Terry) have all shown their ability domestically and against top European clubs. But for the national team, they showed nothing like that. They were poor, looked unmotivated and worse of all showed a complete lack of ideas when playing together.
So whose fault is it? Themselves first, of course, but I think the coach also has to take some of that blame. We could all see England was playing without any width and whenever they stretched their attack they looked far more dangerous. To me Capello was a complete disappointment during this world cup. He acted like a clown, with his tough face act but silly demeanor and failed to really identify the problems England had when seemingly everybody else could. Stubbornness or inability? Doesn't matter. The result is the same.

Capello deserves a chunk of the blame for making stupid like-for-like changes and sticking to his 4-4-2 with the forwards being virtually static up there, when he needed to change things, while Germany pushed and had more in midfield and made a mockery of his tactical outset.
As for the players, some underperformed, some played well. Gerrard had a really bad domestic season and then came out firing for the first few WC games, then in the Germany game he looked like a selfish idiot, taking long shots that missed by miles. Terry played worse than usual for no apparent reason. Lampard was his usual self, terrifying the crossbar, but not often enough. And Rooney was a ghost, in stark contrast to his form in the league. These four men were looked at to hold the team up but just weren't enough.
For English football:
Pundits and former players have been saying it for years. With the way domestic football is being run, England is the architect of its own misfortune. They have rules about the youth academies, that you can only play for them if you live within a certain radius of the training ground (like 30 miles). Families from France, Spain, Italy, etc, are uprooting and moving to these areas so their boys have a shot at big time football and cash. Most Premier League clubs are in the red because of the fortune they spend on foreign players. They need either big quotas in there, or restrictions on player transfer fees. Germany is a brilliant example of how to do it right. They may not be winning Champions League regularly, but their national team is a shining example of modern football done right. Too many foreign players in your league ruin your national team's chances. See: Italy.
