Maybe you will, but this thread is about the etiquette of joining a tournament and then resigning against opponents you can't beat or don't like. Not about Trains and Smiffy.

If many people did this, then it´ ...[text shortened]... e whole tournament system on this site.

Answers on a postcard, or even better in this thread.
In response, i would say that it would be bad sportsmanship to instantly resign to only the high rated players in a tournament. If a player resigns in this way, for whatever personal or professional reasons they might have, they should resing to all games and therefore pullout from the tournament. Even if the chance of beating high rated players is slim, it would be very selfish to resign to their games but play on against the rest.

Resignation like this unbalances the playing field. It is very easy to see that 'playing and loosing' the tough games makes no difference in the end, but more importantly it should be seen that the difference is evident when 'playing and drawing or winning' (however unprobable or difficult) the tough games does make a differnce.

Overall: if you are entering a tournament you are entering to play competitavely and not to instantly resign ANY specific selection of games. If for whatever reasons you do choose to resing in this way you are effectively not playing to win and should pullout thus resigning from all games.

1500 vs 1900 has a better chance.

At 1000 the chances of getting a winning position are slim. The chances of throwing it away should you get it are very high.

A 1500 player should have some understanding of chess and positional/strategic/tactical concepts.

That said I still hang pieces far too often for my liking!
