Evgenij Agrest is a Swedish chess Grandmaster (GM) and chess trainer. He was born on 15 July 1966 in Vitebsk, Belarus. Agrest earned the title of International Master (IM) in 1995 and Grandmaster (GM) in 1997 from the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Agrest has represented Sweden in the Chess Olympiads multiple times, with his first participation in 2000. He has also competed in the European Team Chess Championship and the Nordic Chess Championship.
In his professional career, Agrest has clinched numerous tournament victories. Notably, he won the Swedish Championship in 2001 and 2004. He also bagged the Nordic Championship title in 2004, becoming the first player to win both the Swedish and Nordic championships in the same year.
Aside from playing, Agrest is also an accomplished chess trainer who has worked with the Swedish national team and several junior players. Currently, he is the 5th highest-rated player in Sweden.
Apart from competing and coaching, Agrest holds a degree in computer science from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics. He also works as an IT consultant.
From 2002 to 2015, Agrest was a member of the FIDE's Qualification Commission which oversees the awarding of international chess titles.
