Abhimanyu Mishra is an American chess grandmaster. Born on February 5, 2009, in the city of Englishtown, New Jersey, Mishra holds the record as the youngest grandmaster in chess history, an accomplishment he achieved at just 12 years, 4 months, and 25 days, breaking the existing record held by Sergey Karjakin for 19 years.
Exposed to chess at the age of 2, and started taking formal training and competing at the age of 5, Mishra went on to become the United States Chess Federation's highest-rated player in the under age 8 group. After a rapid string of successes and wins, he was awarded the grandmaster title by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) on June 30, 2021.
His rise to the status of grandmaster involved significant efforts from his father, as well as the larger chess community. His father took him abroad, where he could train more intensively and the GoFundMe campaign "Youngest Chess GM in the World" was launched to sponsor training and tournament costs.
Other notable achievements of Mishra's include becoming the youngest International Master (at age 10 years, 9 months, and 20 days), earning gold at Under-10 World Cadet Championships, and receiving the Samford Fellowship, a prestigious award for aspiring chess grandmasters.
