My uncle, who always lived far away and I rarely saw, taught me chess when I was about 8 and I got to be pretty good for a 10 year old but never progressed further. He got me to start playing him online a few years ago. I learned a few more of his tricks and would even beat him occasionally. Fortunately, I got to visit him in Washington state and play a couple of in-person games before he passed about 5 years ago. I play on in his memory.
