Chess Terms : Square Explained
A Square refers to one of the 64 equal, rectangular divisions of a chessboard. Each of these squares, arranged in an 8×8 grid, is alternately colored light and dark. Squares are identified by a unique coordinate pairing, which combines a letter and a number. The vertical columns are referred to as files and labeled a through h from left to right from the white player's point of view. The horizontal rows are called ranks and labeled 1 through 8 from bottom to top for the white player.
