some of those images are extraordinary, thank you Palynka for sharing this site, it is definitely worth a visit, reminds me of some of the dereliction in Glasgow during the nineteen seventies, which i can vaguely remember, but not in such a scale.

Awesome! I've always been macabrely fascinated with Pripyat and would very much like to visit it one day.

Excellent. I love this sort of thing. I'm particularly fascinated by abandoned (out of service) subway tunnels. There's a cool site with a lot of interesting pics. I'll try to post here if I can find it.

brilliant! thanks. i wonder if Prypyat and its Exclusion Zone were an inspiration for Tarkovsky's Stalker? Nah, since Stalker came out in '79 and Chernobyl didn't happen til '86. But if the dates were right, i'm sure people would insist it must have been an influence. One of my favourite films, BTW.

the Gulkanjima photos reminded me of the science fiction of JG Ballard.

EDIT: i'm trying to imagine what fiction written by William Burroughs and set in Kowloon Walled City would have been like...

But S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the computer game uses Tarkovsky's work as a basis and sets it in Prypiat.

Call of Duty 4 also has a level set in Prypiat which is unbelievably well constructed: http://warriornation.net/Forum/showthread.php?t=369458

i've heard of that, but haven't actually played it. does it feature an abundance of desolate landscapes and menacing atmosphere but barely anything actually happening, like the film?

Great site. There is something eerily beautiful about those places.

Yes to landscapes and atmosphere, but whilst there's tons of walking across these barren wastelands, it is also part tactical shooter. Mind you the atmosphere informs everything, even the other mercenaries you meet are vague, disaffected and rarely hang around in more than groups of two or three. It is a truly awesome game, one of my top 5 of all time.
