Without spoiling the end if you haven't seen the movie, does anyone think this movie was made specifically to anger the Catholic church based on it's ending?
Or do you think it was made by progressive Catholics as a way to encourage the rest of the non-progressives to modernize their views on this issue?
Personally, i thought it was a great film right up until the final reveal. The movie, to me, was about showing that humans are flawed and don't live up to the expectations placed on humans by the religious texts. When they kept showing each of the candidates were flawed or even schemers unworthy of the role of Pope, I thought it was an essay on the failings of humans and that we shouldn't be judged by our flaws but rather by the positive things we have done. Almost a rebuke to cancel culture if you will.
But then they totally moved away from that concept and stuck in the ending which, to me, didn't fit the previous narrative in any meaningful way other than as a shock ending...a forced plot device just to make a political point.
