@ghost-of-a-duke saidmy mother loved Madame Butterfly
Puccini's Madam Butterfly. The final act is tragically beautiful.
I'm not much of an opera fan but find many of the arias beautiful
I loved Tommy: the rock opera and Evita, my favorite
@lemondrop saidthe phantom of the opera is also one of my favorites

I'm sure most posters here would be classical opera fans as this thread was meant but modern opera is great too
@lemondrop saidAbout 250 years? π
what is the difference between an opera and a musical?
@lemondrop saidWhile it is true that I had thought of classical opera, I’m glad that you added modern opera. My daughters grew up appreciating both. Are you familiar with Miss Saigon? It has a similar tragic theme as Madame Butterfly.

I could be wrong but I think that the difference between opera and musical has to do with the amount of spoken elements within the performance.
@wolfe63 saidHaha!!! Funny, but surprisingly, Puccini, who composed Madam Butterfly was born in 1858, and while Verdi was born somewhat earlier, even he doesn’t meet your 250 year measure. Some operas are relatively more contemporary than one might think.
