How about the Kama Sutra?
Is it erotica or porn?
This is what wikipedia says about it:
Kamasutra, (also Kama Sutra), is an ancient Indian text widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature. It is said to be authored by Mallanaga Vatsyayana. A portion of the work deals with human sexual behavior.

Pornography is a respectable academic discipline. The only question is why academics privilege nasty porn, like Sade, over more conventional forms.
Academically speaking, the subtle is more useful than the evident.
At least in this area.
Go to the museum of Pompei in Naples and you will see some examples of Roman porn. Many temples in Asia, especially Thailand have pretty explicit carvings. They may have a cultural or religious significance, but I reckon the carvers were not much better than us doodling breasts and phallic symbols when bored in class.
I can second that. I've just recently returned from Koh Tao, Thailand, and it seems that you can't leave a log or any vaguely cylindrical piece of wood laying about without one of the locals carving it into the exaggerated form of a veiny triumphant dick. Even low lying tree branches aren't safe. I didn't see this practice any where else in Thailand, one of the locals told me they bring good luck.
