Does the saddest song have to be a cover?

In that case I nominate:

Swans - Love Will Tear Us Apart

That's not even the saddest version of that song!

(Possibly my favourite cover version of anything)

Here is a good candidate - Talk Talk's "I Believe in You" from the classic album "Spirit of Eden" (1988).

The Hollies - "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" played at my brother's funeral 6 weeks ago. That's been the saddest song for me this year.

Sorry for your loss! I lost two brothers, just not recently, but the pain never goes away, it just self mitigates somehow!

"Dark was the night, cold was the ground" by Blind Willie Johnson.

If you've heard this you's have to agree that it is the saddest most gut wrenching song ever sung.

That reminds me of "Honey, I miss you" by Bobby Goldsboro. I had a little dog called Honey when it was re-released in 1975.

One of my favoutite unsad songs was "Wonderful World" sang by Louis Armstrong.

However, my sister played it at her young son's funeral.
Can you imagine that song in that setting?

Suddenly, it became the saddest song I have ever heard!

-m.
I recently went to my brother in laws, mums funeral.
She had cancer, so she had time to plan the ceremony.
The last song was "A wonderful World" , but not the Luios Armstrong version, rather a version with just a guitar (I think) , and singing being played "reggae" style.
Very Simple. Very Beautiful and sad.
It's a sad and beautiful world.

Sounded like some big Samoan guy playing it or somethin'
