Originally posted by Bosse de NageYellow rose of Justice? What song is that? BTW, the original yellow rose of texas was a racist song. You ever hear the phrase 'high yellow'? That referred back in the day to a black woman with light skin so the song was originally about a light skinned black woman, the yellow rose of texas.
Sometimes songs are marred when mishearings are corrected. For instance, 'Yellow Rose of Justice' lost its importance for me on being corrected to 'Yellow Rose of Texas'. (I was about 8.)
Can you bear witness?
The original verses:
There's a yellow rose in Texas, that I am going to see,
No other darky knows her, no darky only me
She cryed so when I left her it like to broke my heart,
And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part.
Chorus:
She's the sweetest rose of color this darky ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Dearest May, and sing of Rosa Lee,
But the Yellow Rose of Texas is the only girl for me.
When the Rio Grande is flowing, the starry skies are bright,
She walks along the river in the quite summer night:
She thinks if I remember, when we parted long ago,
I promised to come back again, and not to leave her so.
[Chorus]
Oh now I'm going to find her, for my heart is full of woe,
And we'll sing the songs together, that we sung so long ago
We'll play the bango gaily, and we'll sing the songs of yore,
And the Yellow Rose of Texas shall be mine forevermore.
Is it still racist if it was sung mainly by black folk about black folk?
One song I mis-heard, "Poetry in motion'' I thought was 'Oh a tree in motion'🙂
Paul Revere & The Raiders - Indian Reservation (Cherokee People).
Part of one line goes took away our way of life
Tomahawk and bow and knife.
I had thought it went ...tomahawk and the Bowie knife. Which bugged me, since the Bowie knife is the white man's invention.
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising
The line reads Yeah, there's a bad moon on the rise.
Many have thought it went Yeah, there's a bathroom on the right. I saw them in concert, and thought the misinterpretation was useful. 😛
There's a few I can think of. "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. With four hundred children.... Should be with four hungry children."
" shot the sheriff, but I did not kill him dead you see" Should be I did not kill the deputy.
Macy Gray has one where she sings "...my world crumbles when you are not around. " I once while having some of the finest whiskey heard "i wear goggles when you are not around" so there you go.
I was in a band in the 70's.
We covered Stuck in the Middle with You by Stealers Wheel.
For years we opened with.
"Well I don't know why I carry a knife."
We found out later the correct verse is:
"Well I don't know why I came here to tonight."
I think our line is better though it was an accident.

Theme from The Bridge, the brilliant Danish-Swedish crime drama, not recommended for those with anxiety or a weak heart!
I don't know what the actual words are, and it might spoilt it to find out...
