LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - The legal age of sale for cigarettes in England should be raised by one year every year until eventually no one can buy tobacco products, a government-commissioned review said on Thursday.
Progressively increasing the minimum age from 18 was one of 15 recommendations in a review ordered by health minister Sajid Javid to help meet a target to be "smokefree" by 2030. Smokefree is defined as 5% smoking prevalence or less in England.
What the concept is (I believe New Zealand has adopted this already) is to ban anyone under the age of 15 from ever being able to buy cigarettes legally.
This in a world which has realised that legalising marijuana is a far better method of controlling the sale and criminality involved with it, than keeping it illegal.
With many countries looking into expanding this to other sorts of drugs as well.
Alcohol bans have a similar record of failing completely and increasing criminality.
Personally, I don’t think substances should be banned. Once someone is an adult it’s up to them what they do to their own bodies.
It’s the government’s responsibility to educate people and make sure that quality is good (less overdosing, etc. ) and that crime is minimalised.
Anyone agree with this sort of total ban (in the long run)?

@shavixmir saidIn NZ the guy that sells cigars is not allowed to send a picture of a cigar in an email. He has a walk in humidor, customers are by law not allowed to enter. If you told someone that 20 short years ago they would have thought you were a sunstroker.

You think it will ever be enough for goobermint control freak bureaurats, you think if you just comply with X that will be the end of it, you think you can keep kneeling lower and lower before them.
You will be stomped into the ground.
@shavixmir saidIf substances are not banned, and I am being serious here, I know nothing of them and cigarettes, never have touched a cigarette...

If they are not banned, how do handle the fentanyl crisis, to name just one? Allow it to be available?
@averagejoe1 saidPeople who are going to use drugs are going to use them legal or not.

It’s better to educate on risks and usage. Guarantee a stable quality and help people with their addictions instead of criminalizing them.
A side bonus is that you destroy crime syndicates and tackle financial problems people have in feeding their addiction (so less petty crime as well).

@shavixmir saidAs fars as bans go, this one is not bad. The same people stay grandfathered in for the duration. Maybe it will catch people before they start. That seems the goal.

Then reward abstinence.

@mott-the-hoople saidI didn't get that either.

My take on this is that my child will have access to fentanyl. I prob wont be thinking ".....Then reward abstinence". Forgive me if I don't know what that means.
Y'all are so strange to AvJoe. You are sitting here suggesting opening a flood gate to drugs. I am quite sure that Su and Shav have no children.
Well, I am off to take my grandchild fishing. Jesus.

@shavixmir saidNicotine is one of the most addictive substances available whereas cannabis is not addictive in the chemical sense whilst people can become dependent psychologically.

Also there are medicinal qualities in cannabis.
As with nicotine it’s the young that need protecting from its availability. There is evidence that strong skunk type plants can damage brains that are not yet fully formed.
I think both should be tightly controlled but available, I have no idea how you get around the criminal supply chain and its implications.

@shavixmir saidPeople can grow tobacco. I don't even smoke tobacco, but I started some indoors and grew it here in Michigan several years ago just to see if I could do it. I am against banning any plants, even opium poppies. It is wrong to make any natural plants illegal.

There are plants that are highly toxic if ingested that are legal, but they only want to ban plants that are unlikely to kill people. Totally retarded.

@metal-brain saidTobacco is highly toxic, even more so after all the processing to make a cigarette.

Tobacco is also highly likely to kill people.
It should be so highly regulated that corporations can't make money off of it. That's the only thing that will stop these death merchants.

When plants are made illegal it is so the pharmaceutical corporations can have a monopoly growing those plants while they throw you in prison for it if you grow opium poppies. Big pharma is allowed to have an opium poppy supply for their opiate derivatives. Not you. You have to pay them for it.
Drug dealing legalized and monopolized. Just another big scam.
