As it happens before the discovery of penicillin the only remotely effective cure for syphillis was arsphenamine which is a compound of arsenic. It won't discourage prostitutes, but syphillis is a cause of still births so it will ward off that particular killer of babies.

I would MUCH rather have a Bernie style government run by a sane person and the results of that kind of experiment would show itself to be good or bad by the outcomes.
The real issue is whether we can regain the trust of our allies.
Whether you know it or not or believe it or not, our allies now consider us to NOT be reliable partners on the world stage.
I imagine you could care less about mere world politics but remember, the population of the world is some 20 times that of the US and if we just pull the plug on foreign interactions and just make a 3000 mile wide shield over the US and say rest of the world go to hell, what do you think would be the result?
How long would it take for despots around the world to start increasing their territories like Russia is doing as we speak in the Ukraine?
No big deal right because the US can run its own affairs and screw the rest of the world.
