Until abortion became legal, women in the US struggled on the black market for abortions, suffering tremendous risk to their bodies. Now abortion is legal, however it is so heavily regulated that it has distorted the abortion market.
I say let the market decide. There is a demand for abortions and willing suppliers. Low cost, safe abortions that could ...[text shortened]... ly beneficial trade is being restricted. Government is a leviathan! Free market = free people!
Isn't the market run by greedy gamblers with no concern for anything but their own profits???
Surely that can't be good for the quality of the abortions as they will all make cut backs to get more money!
"Why use sterile equipment, market research shows that the average woman only has one abortion in her life? So, any complications...well that will just make more money as she has to be carted off to the privitised health system we have shares in as well. It won't damage our abortion product."
"Trained employees cost too much. We can give crash courses to unemployed people and get them up and working within a month. This will also cut back on unemployment benefit, leaving the country more money to invest in weapons...of which we also have shares."
"We'll give women a 10% discount if we're then allowed to use the removed embryo for research possiblities."
Mhmmmm...yes...it sounds like a bloody plan to me!

You'd have more expensive, high-end places with safe clean instruments and certified doctors, and cheap shops with pliers and butter knives and a guy who sells Amway on the side. This is good. We don't need a government monitoring these American businesses. If a company is sterilizing women due to negligence, then they'll go out of business. Besides if any one is sterilized its the poor people who breed to much anyway. The kids would grow up to be criminals. It's been proven: abortion prevents crime. This is the dream that brought the Pilgrims over on the Mayflower. This is the industry that made America the greatest nation on the face of the earth.

I knew it was a mistake to use sarcasm to make a point.
This whole bit was related to the minimum wage thread. Tell you what. Bring up some good journal articles on the subject, and we can read and discuss them reasonably.

So if it's sarcasm, what is your point, a minimum wage for abortionists paid (in part) by people who vehemently oppose abortion?
Tell you what, state your point and we'll blow it out of the water.

I can discuss with the ignorant.
I can discuss with the willful.
But with the willfuly ignorant, I refuse to waste my time.

Since this has blown up in my face, getting a rise from the wrong people, I am forced to admit that I do not agree with the "free market is always good" idea. I have continually argued against it on the grounds that it is simplistic.
The hope was that those of the anti-abortionists here who also espouse "let the market decide" economics would recognize that they need to apply caveats to their statements. It is obvious empirical fact that a market exists for abortions. There is a great demand for them, as well as adequate supply of doctors to perform them. Those who argue that the government should outlaw the practice, restrict supply of abortions, or otherwise directly manipulate the price of abortion are arguing that in some cases the market should not always decide.
Guess I should have stated this at the beginning of the thread. I'm sure with just a little imagination, we can think of some other markets that perhaps should be restricted.
