Because the huge population of some states should not be allowed to overrule what the other 49 want.
Like what happened in 2016 when California jumped in with both feet and suddenly Hillary drew ahead in the popular vote at the end of the day.

Trump said peacefully because he KNEW he had make for some wiggle room. Tell me, how did that ever so peaceful mob come up with 'Hang Pence', eh? They said that before the electoral votes were even BEGUN to be counted. As far as the PB were concerned Pence should have been one of what they would consider a good guy.
