"Modern censorship
Still, book challenges are more common than ever. Between July 1, 2021 and March 31, 2022 alone, there were 1,586 book bans in 86 school districts across 26 states—affecting more than two million students, according to PEN America, a nonprofit that advocates for free speech."
Is the the best way to have a free society? Saying we don't want people upset when those cursed writers and historians bring up the subject of racial discrimination or slavery, we won't allow that trash in OUR libraries.
This is HERE and NOW not 19th century.,
Book banning is just as sinister now or more sinister than it was last century or before, and there have already been book BURNING parties.
Another way to kill democracy here in the US and it has already worked around the world.
Another consequence of the rise of authoritarians here and around the world.
@sonhouse saidElementary and High Schools removing books because of inappropriate sexual content does not constitute nationwide "banning'. You can still buy them if you want.

If the GOVERNMENT removes all of a certain book and bans its sale and distribution, THAT is "banning."
Let us know when they do that.
@Cliff-Mashburn
That is NOT the issue. The ISSUE is the sinister rewriting of history, trying to erase the knowledge of slavery, discrimination in past centuries like White drinking fountain only or Blacks sit in the back of the bus. THAT is what is happening having ZERO to do with sex. Even in sex issues they want to demonize even the IDEA that some folks are gay, they want to make that issue disappear also, they don't give a rats ass 3 or so percent of ALL humanity everywhere on earth INCLUDING here in the US was, is, and will be gay in newer generations.
That doesn't stop those people from denying that there even is such a thing as gay folks, they think banning books with any kind of gay theme will make gayness disappear from the human race but of course that is a vain effort since no matter how many gays you kill, they will pop up again in the next generation.
@divegeester saidYeah he's really flipped out with all those weird accusations.

Calm tf down sonhouse. We are only 48 hours out of the election and you are already experiencing a core meltdown.
@AThousandYoung saidyou sex freaks need to leave the children alone!
Should schools have copies of and assign My Secret Life?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Secret_Life_(memoir)
@sonhouse
Ban bools, like what... "Raul has two fathers"??? Burning isn't good enough.
you do realize that school districts CAN choose what books they will allow in their classrooms and in the library.
what you're saying is that if I don't buy John Bigelow's book, I'm against free speech!
Please!
@Earl-of-Trumps
RIght. NOW like in Florida, book banning is a political weapon. They think our poor sensitive white kids will freak out if they knew their great great grandpa had slaves or there actually were 'whites only' hotels, busses, schools, whatever, and they will do ANYTHING to erase all that from history.
We NEED to know how we got here and what happened in the past to understand what is going on now.
If you don't understand that you are part of the problem and don't WANT a solution.
All the words of Martin Luther King Jr means nothing to you.
@sonhouse saidYou didn’t provide a link, any examples nor any context, so I had a quick look.

There are a dozen books which have been banned in Colorado which has had a Democrat Governor since 2019. Were these some of the ones you are referring to?
@sonhouse saidI am all for teaching the kids the awful things that democrats put african americans through, and then,

what the democrats did to african americans during reconstruction,, all FOR it.
@Earl-of-Trumps
But when it comes to Trump having to go to court in 1976 for refusing to rent to blacks, we won't EVER talk about THAT, right?
Or LBJ signing the civil rights act. How could that POS sign that TERRIBLE law into effect.,
@divegeester
Right, like you are totally unaware of any book banning in Florida.
So for folks who don't have internet like Dive,
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c93pe9p5479o
Banning Carrie for instance, just one example. Steven King off limits.
