Looks like they have exceptionally high population density. Also consider that Europe, the USA, and Russia are all of comparable size to China, but they have more people than any of those.
I answered the question in this thread, China is #78 on the list of countries with the highest population density. Many city states, islands in there, but also countries with sizable populations but much higher densities, e.g. India, Bangladesh.

Remember that Europe exported a lot of its population to the US and Australia.
China, both historically and recently, has exported a lot of its population to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the West.

Japan doesn't seem to have concerns about overpopulation...why?

Japan is rich and can afford to feed and house many people. Also, Japan can afford to put environmental measures in place to ensure pollution does not get out of hand.

japanese have had famines in the past. nowadays the young people are in no hurry to reproduce so they're not at replacement level and the govt is more worried about that.

They have less poor people and so population growth is naturally lower.

But even if they are concerned about over population, they do not have the type of government that could implement a one child policy.

the other day i saw an article about a Japanese baby-simulating robot. it's supposed to stimulate the maternal/paternal instinct in young folks so they'll hurry home and get busy making their own. it looks ugly to me, tho. probably designed by a guy.

While over in South Korea, government workers are sent home early on, ahem, 'family days' - the idea not to spend time with one's family, but to [i]make one[i/]:

I spend quite a bit of time in Seoul on business and I can confirm that the Koreans work extremely long hours. The young software engineers will work till 0300 or 0500 and then stagger in the next day at 1100 ashen faced. Obviously, this leaves no time for procreation. One Wednesday last year they were all sent home at 1800 for a half day and nine months later two babies arrived on the scene. Now, it is company policy to take a half day (ie stop at 6pm) on Wednesdays, but they tend to sneak back in to get working again.

boredom coupled with state of the art gadgetry and internet bandwidth that would make you cry. with all that in play, why would you concentrate on one particular woman with an over-arching thought of creating progeny/

Japan is actually not very high on the list of countries with broadband internet connections.

Western and Northern Europe seem to have most fast internet connections, as well as South Korea where online gaming is a national sport.
