I believe the democratic process there elected the right person to bring about social improvement and stabilise the US economy; I only hope that the complexities of the houses provides a sufficient balance of power.

The house will continue to pass bipartisan bills that Senate Republicans will promptly veto.

I would tend to agree. I think it a mistake to have an opposition party in power of any kind. Obstructionists need to go!!

The greatest problem now is the debt. My guess is that Obama will suggest two things, taxing the "rich" and reducing the military, both of which the House will object to. In the end, deficits will remain close to $2 trillion and nothing much changes. Then in 2014 they can point the finger at the opposition party and give them all the boot!! 😵

I am not sure how much bipartisan stuff will be coming out of the House, but the Senate Republicans will surely continue to filibuster what bipartisan stuff does come out of the House, and also filibuster appointments and judicial nominations, etc.

The filibuster, a powerful procedure once rarely used is now used all the time. There was like 250 Republican filibusters during Obama's first term. In contrast, during Johnson's 6 years as President, there was one filibuster. Fortunately, some think the Senate while retaining the filibuster may modify it in rules changes in 2015.

If no deal gets struck by the end of the year, ALL the Bush tax cuts get tossed and there are significant cuts in both military and discretionary domestic spending.

Personally, I'm not so sure that would be a "bad" thing.

Cut government spending? Have you become an extremist teabagger?

At least Obama did not make any promises about not raising taxes on the middle class this go round. They are fair game.

You make about 20 posts a day complaining about the deficit, but you don't want to raise taxes even though they are at their lowest level of GNP since 1950.

My taxes have already been raised with Obamacare. And now with spending out of control inflation is taking more of my buying power away. Do I want tax increases on top of this? No, and I imagine no one else does.

Having said that, I would not mind tax increases if they would balance a budget, but I refuse them if they insist on doing what they like with the money like they always do. However, the tax increases needed to balance the budget will never happen, because they know it will be curtains for them all in 2014. People would grab a pitch fork and storm the Whilte House.

Obamacare is a tax and rates will continue to go up. I know I'm paying more this year.
