It's all about money and Progressive corporate tyranny. Soon the tyrannical Cuban government will be putting dollar bills in the G string of corporations like Monsanto, just like their Chinese communist brethren.

"It's all about money and Progressive corporate tyranny."

It's all about getting access to Cuba's off-shore oil fields. The U.S. govt doesn't give a rat's arse about the plight of the average Cuban.

It's all about Obama trying to change the subject.

This one appears to have a slightly better grip on reality than the previous one.

No, it's clearly all about rwingett.

The Pope points out things he thinks are unfair all the time. The "powers that be" never cared before. Why should I think the Pope made a difference here?

The reasons for the embargo have long since passed. Even Rand Paul came out in favor of normalization. Florida politicians like Jeb Bush will always have to oppose normalization to satisfy the Cuban expat community and some politicians will oppose it just to spite Obama, but most people don't care about this issue enough to stop the normalization process.

A slight majority of the Cuban-American community
in Miami-Dade County opposes continuing the U.S.
embargo of Cuba. Countywide, 52% of the respondents
oppose continuing the embargo. This percentage rises
among Cuban Americans ages 18-29, 62% of whom
oppose continuing the embargo. Similarly, 58% of those
arriving since 1995 oppose continuing the embargo.
Among registered voters, the split is nearly equal,
with 51% in favor of continuing the embargo and 49%
opposing its continuation. Support for continuing the
embargo is strongest among Republican registered
voters
(figure 2).
A large majority favors diplomatic relations with Cuba
(68😵, with younger respondents strongly backing the
policy shift (90😵. Support for re-establishing diplomatic
ties maintains a solid majority among all age groups up
to age 70, after which it drops to a third of the population
supporting the policy. Those arriving since 1995 favor
the policy shift by 80%. A majority of registered voters
express support—55%. This number balloons to 83%
among non-registered voters

But it may be that older Cuban Americans have more political sway with the likes of Rubio.

Fair enough.

Amended:

Florida politicians like Jeb Bush will, for the present and immediate future, have to oppose normalization to satisfy the Cuban expat community.

Republicans always oppose Obama no matter what he proposes. So sad.

"Even Rand Paul came out in favor of normalization"

Are you suggesting that free trade is a position Rand Paul is not normally in favor of?

I have always been against the embargo. Supporting the embargo is hypocrisy. China is far worse than Cuba. Fidel and his coup was supported by the USA government. They had a deal & Fidel reneged. That is the only real reason for the embargo.

Point well made. Rand Paul and his father Ron Paul have long held the libertarian position favoring true free trade. Not the managed trade of NAFTA and GATT.

I find it funny that a position that originated with a Democrat administration, is now the sole province of some Republicans, according to the media and the Dems.

It seems that ordinary Americans are about split on the issue, and I wonder how much difference it really makes. You want to buy Cuban cigars at exorbitant prices? You want to visit Cuba? What difference does it make to most Americans? What does it mean for average Cubans? Not a whole lot I suspect.
