Now now boys and girls, do we need a review of our 6th grade Civics classes before we talk too much much more about America and some of the West as democracies? America is NOT a Democracy, it is a Democratic Republic. There is a difference

The difference is representation. In a true democracy you're thoughts and ideas are not represented by anyone. If America were a simple democracy everything that Congress fights about and ultimatly decides would be left up to us to vote on personally. In a democratic republic you choose people (thats the democratic part) i.e. Congress and then they represent you (thats the republic pasrt) and vote, choose and decide the administration of the country. The phrase is virtual representation, you are represented through the members of congress you elect. In a democracy no one represents you, you speak dirtectly for yourself. Hope that made some sort of sense : )

yes it made perfect sense! thank you!

it is weird though, because all this time i have thought this was a democracy without even considering the 'virtual representation' part.

are there any 'simple' democracies around at a national level?
what seems to me to be such a thing is the anarchistic societies rwingett talks about towards the end of this thread:

(middle of the page is where he starts)

thought you might like to see it (in case you haven't already). it is very nicely done.

some people think that democracy is flawed, and in some ways i do to, but would you rather live in a dictatorship where the only winners are the bloodfirsty dictators? or in communisum where no one is a winner? i think not, maybe their is a better system of goverment, but for now i think that the majority should continue to rule and the minority should just live a long side them, that way their is only 1 loser....
