Ceding from the Union would probably cause a civil war but dramatically strengthening states rights whilst abolishing the electoral college for a much paired down federal state whose responsibilities would shrink to defence and macro economic policy might get as close as possible to compromise that would allow all Americans to choose the State that suited their own personal preference.
