The percentage of oxygen in the air has not remained constant, it was much greater when they were alive so they didn't need to breathe so deeply. However, it has been decreasing and so they would not be able get the required amount of oxygen with today's air.

this is one of the problems i have with dating systems, as one cannot tell what a sample has 'experienced' through it's life. i guess i just don't understand them yet. i do know there is truth to them, i'm sceptical on how much.
