You've now posted three times on this thread and you still haven't addressed the question: Why do earthquakes in China kill so many people? In fact you now seem to be have totally absorbed yourself with whether or not I have disrespected you. Whatever empathy you might claim to have for the Chinese, it seems you are steadfastly refusing to display it on this chess web site forum or to share it with all the strangers here.
Do tell me then, how the fact that I answered a direct question leads you to believe I have a lack of empathy and am self-absorbed, since I have the third post. Then come to my classroom and tell my students that all of our discussions are figments of their imagination because you've determined that answering a question on a chess web site with stranger ...[text shortened]... more weight than all the conversations I have with friends, family, and students in real life.

Why do earthquakes in China kill so many people? Comparable quakes in America kill about 4 people.
Originally posted by slimjimThis 5,000,000 homeless thing is almost beyond imagination. Here in Yogykarta in May 2006 there were, at one point, 800,000 people without shelter but the sense of community solidarity helped to take care of that relatively quickly. I know that Chinese culture is similar in this respect (although dissimilar in other ways) but 5,000,000 people without homes is a catastrophe on a whole different level.

Your point?
zeeblebot: from the look of the damage scenes on yahoo news, lack of sufficiently beefy building codes for earthquake zones, or lack of enforcement.
FMF: there are theoretical building codes, but yes - as you say - a complete lack of enforcement, even here in this highly active earthquake zone.
zeeblebot: a lot of the buildings are probably pretty old. earthquake standards have evolved a lot since they were built, i bet.
FMF: I am building my own 2 storey house here at the moment. I bribed the building standards inspectors so that they will look the other way. It's saving me a pile of money.
zeeblebot: don't sleep on the ground floor!
zeeblebot: Survivors blame corruption, shoddy construction and cost cutting for the collapse of so many 'tofu buildings'
And then you, blundering in, in all your omnescience...
AThousandYoung: Idiot. I guess the next quake will get you.
It's called 'banter'. zeeblebot and I were using irony. And then you called me an idiot? Oh dear. What an embarrassing situation - having to spell out a humorous bit of chat to someone whose humour has been eradicated by his desire to pounce on a fellow poster!

Did I miss an attempted absolute zinger from you?! I'm sorry, I must have been blinded by the lack of wit.
