Most people believe that Elvis Pressley is the best artist/composer e.t.c. of the twenteh century.........he isn't in my view that is this is what i think of him:

I've never heard anyone, even HUGE fans of his, say that Elvis was the best composer of the 20th century. He didn't do a whole lot in terms of writing songs, although he does have a few 'songwriting' credits.

A:I am not aware of any public statements that Elvis made on the topic of songwriting, but it is my opinion that he really never pushed himself in that direction. In fact, I do not believe that Elvis was involved in any lyric writing or the process of songwriting with the writers he shares credit with (the list of which is limited to Vera Matson, Otis Blackwell, Red West, and Charlie Hodge). He could have been more involved in the writing process with West and Hodge, as they were close friends, but he did not sit down with Blackwell and Matson.
Elvis's credits for arranging and "adapting" songs carry a bit more weight, as he was very much involved in the process of making a song into an "Elvis song." He was also considered a very "hands on" producer in the stuido, where much of the work on the songs took place. The arranging/adapting credits, which are numerous, are valid artistic credits; his songwriting credits, I believe, were for business reasons.
Several people have said that Elvis did write some lyrics, and there's no reason to believe he didn't. But, I don't know that there's any official record of him having done so, i.e. those lyrics being released to the public. "
(On that note, I've heard that he did something like 40 or 50 takes of "Hound Dog" before he got just the sound he wanted)

The 'junk food addict' line kind of gave away what era you've been exposed to. There really is no comparison. I'm not saying I personally think he was the greatest ever, but there's no denying that in his early years he had something magical.
Later on, though, the magic was pretty much buried.
