What a wierd thread. The USA responds to increasing oil prices by consuming less oil? No, don't be silly, we'll turn food into oil.
So is this a good idea. If your a rich over fed westerner its a fine idea. If you're poor and starving in the third world its appalling
Some cultures have figured out how to feed themselves, Others still insist on having more babies than they can feed.

Clear the Amazon; plant corn for SUVs. Poor people might starve, but at last people* are getting to the point where they can admit they really just don't care.
*the poor are not people

Let me tell you straight.
The obvious response to energy shortages is to use less energy. An obvious place to start would be to introduce energy efficient technologies. The next item on the agenda would be to make lifestyle changes to reduce demand; use public transport, walk, cycle, drive a small car, turn the airconditioning down, or off,; the list ...[text shortened]... will be called greedy. Live with it, lots of people in the world will think your greedy.
As far as SUV's go. There are millions sitting on new car dealers lots that they can't even give away. More and more Americans are buying gas efficient cars. We're not as stupid and rich as you think.
When's the last time you gave some bucks to a charity that feeds starving children? I do all the time, But To American poor who are starving. Am i still Greedy?

I can see the virtue in producing biofuels on marginal land, after all, the EU is paying farmers to keep some of their fields empty. But I can't see it as a fix for the long term energy needs of the planet.
I'm glad all of the US populations is not rich and stupid, maybe Bush gives a bad impression of your nation.
Charity? I've supported a charity that installs wells and sanitation in the Third world for over 20 years, cash, every month. http://www.wateraid.org/

Originally posted by aardvarkhomeCould you post a link to your statement that the bushel price has doubled in the last year. The price here in the states has gone up about 2USD/bu. over the last few years, hardly doubled and a lot of that can be blamed on increased production/distribution costs due to increases in the price of oil.
Let me tell you straight.

Futures for the bushel price for this year are actually down over last year, right now.
I know that the price in Zimbabwe has tripled but their department of agriculture raised the price to encourage more production due to recent drought, not for ethanol processing.
