What are they?
And why are they so important?

It is a somewhat ambiguous term that generally describes that set of values which keeps the family a strong support and part of a person's life. The purpose of this family is to help, guide and direct another family member in their life and to raise morale in general.

However, both the right and the left have skewed the term "family values" to mean what THEY feel is a correct political stance. For example, the left will redefine what the term "family" in family values means so that it includes same sex marriages whereas the right will define family values as anti-abortion or anti-femenism.

Why do we need to keep the family as a good support?

And, given that families are different, how is it possible to have a set of family values that are beneficial to everyone?

And whats wrong with same-sex marriage?

If I recall the term family values was started by Dan Quale who was Bush seniors Vice President in the 1980's. I think he raised the issue due to a Murphy Brown episode on TV that showed a single mother wanting to have a child out of wed lock and raise it on her own. If any one remembers Danny boy you will remember someone who was often ridiculed and belittled by saying stupid things and not being very articulate. Then he spoke out against Murphy Brown and said she did not demonstrate good family values. The media loved it. They derided him into oblivion and he was the butt of every joke. The next thing I know every politician in America is using the phrase family values and how they are in favor of it. I think it means different things to different people which is why it is such a brilliant term to use. Whatever you think are good family values is what you think of when you hear the word. Sadly, Danny boy will probably never get credit for the brilliant political term he insitigated.

1. You don't have to. Generally speaking though it is a good idea to keep such support around.

2. The right wing uses the term "family values" to define what is a family. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are right. It doesn't matter how the makeup of your family is, a good set of values is still a good set of values.

3. I didn't bring mention that same-sex marriage was wrong. Though personally, I am against it. I could write a paragraph on it, but we might as well start another thread if we want to keep this a "family values" discussion 🙂

It is too easy to say that family values is a buzz word that doesn't mean anything. This is because both the right and the left have used it as a tool to ply their trade. It is somewhat vague. Despite that, the term has merit, and by just saying that it means nothing is the easy way out.

Family values are simply a set of moral guidelines employed by a specific family unit. The purpose is to provide the physical/psychological/emotional cohesion necessary for the general survival of the group.

They are the basic building block of society. They support you and you support them, almost unconditionally. Every civilised society that has ever existed placed the utmost importance on the family unit. Those (individuals and societies) which lose the importance of this building block crumble and die.

I am simply amazed, Do you know what "good" is? do you want us to prove what is good about "good" as well? What about Evil? or are you one of them that think there is no good, there is no evil, no free will. My parents taught me about good, evil, family values, etc, when I was growing up.
Did yours?

What??? I asked him to prove that family values are good. Is that difficult to answer?

Sometimes i feel "family values" cannot be "good"- even detrimental to the family.

Oh, and no I do not believe in free will.

Guy asks a question .. you give him an honest answer .. his responce is to basicly call you a liar .. "prove it"

Wecome to the world of the troll.
If it was your 10 yr old kid did that, you'd slap that smug smile off his face .. alas .. the internet.

Here's a tip. If you don't feed trolls they usually go away. It's all about the attention you give them.
