@suzianne saidStop lying. You know I never said that.
That's okay, you can always eat babies, like you're always talking about.

@metal-brain saidSorry when did I ever give the impression I was a massive fan of capitalism you halfwit. I believe in socially controlled capitalism because, I do not believe in Stalinist despotism or Putinesque robber baron economics ideally I’d like to see left wing democratic socialism whereby the ultimate economic and political power is invested in truly democratically elected governments.
You mean you don't trust good ol' capitalism? LOL!
Welcome to the real world. Capitalists don't respect competition like they claim to. They are out to screw over anyone they can. You want wheat and corn? Pay us for it. Go ahead and blame it on Putin. We don't care.
Scapegoats are nice. Blame the high fuel prices on Putin while you are at it. That is what Biden is doing.

@athousandyoung saidI think your nickpicking here the price of gas has gone up in the US because of the global supply and demand equation same with wheat. No one is claiming that the 1st world is going to starve because of this crisis I’ve already pointed out that the usual victims will be the real victims again. Not sure what the point of this thread is we know that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is going to push wheat prices up along with cooking oils which form the basis of survival in many of the worlds poorest people.
That doesn't take into account logistics. If the USA has 10x as much food as needed to feed it's citizens and the rest of the world has half as much as it needs, food will be cheaper in the USA no matter what the global market has to say.
@kevcvs57 saidYou mean you want to be more like Russia.

@kevcvs57 saidDid you know non paying members used to be able to post 2 threads per day and now RHP changed it to only 1?

No matter who blames who, things really do look bleak.
I’m very thankful. Potatoes are doing well. Just picked a quart of fresh peppers, half-bushel of tomatoes, a little early squash, and three kinds of beans are coming on fast. Zucchini lookin’ good as well.
I am very thankful that all the tilling and planting and weeding are paying off. Before supper tonight, I will give thanks to The One Who Causes Food To Spring From The Earth. And I will certainly ask Him to bless all those hungry in the world. Not everyone is blessed as me with good soil in which to harvest.

@metal-brain saidI hope so. I need to lose some weight.
Ukraine produces and exports a lot of food. War means less exports. Will it lead to a world wide food shortage of wheat and other ag products?
@liljo saidI planted a lot of potatoes. I hope I can take care of them all when the potato beetles need controlling. I do not use pesticides. Bintje grows well here in northern Michigan.

@metal-brain saidAgain, you contradict yourself.
I planted a lot of potatoes. Bintje
But this time, at least, I cannot blame you. This is something most people outside the Netherlands do not know.
Bintje is not a good potato. It's a poor excuse for a tuber which has no taste and no texture. It's the potato's equivalent of Domino's "Pizza". In fact, my grandfather - who also grew potatoes, preferably Eigenheimers - used to say: "Bintjes aren't potatoes. Bintjes happened to be planted next to potatoes and were mistaken for them."
Do yourself a favour and switch to Bildtstar.
@shallow-blue saidHow did I contradict myself?

Bintje tastes fine to me. It grows well in the soil here without any soil amendments. That is why I like it. I have no idea if Bildtstar would grow as well. Is that a Dutch variety as well?
@metal-brain saidFor a year. It's a very, very hungry cultivar. It leeches nutrients from the soil like few others do. Before long, you'll find you need to use more artificial fertiliser for them alone than you ever bought for your entire garden. Don't say I didn't warn you.

@kevcvs57 saidWhenever the US tries to feed the 3rd World the people over there get upset because our food is driving local food producers out of business. It’s not as simple as that.
