Ok, my computer is currently infested with 7 trojans and stuff like that... and while I struggle to keep popups and viruses behind the line, I wonder... what makes a person invest its time creating viruses? what's the benefit for humankind? what's the benefit for the person? why? why? why?!?!?!

😠

Is it a version of antisocial behavior? Should kids be pulled off computers and shown that life is out there instead of spending too much time creating crap? Is this internet thing creating the illusion oif a power that simply does not exist?

I am just speculating, but it really escapes me how can someone put valuable, precious time in front of a computer creating things to damage others. What's the point?

Please share your thoughts.

It is interesting, with all the training and knowledge necessary in becoming an IT professional, the number one question I receive is; "Why do people make viruses?" This always makes me wonder if FBI profilers are ever asked; "Why does my computer have so many pop-up ads?" And of course, computer people often ask each other: "Why do people think they need more memory with their hard drive is full? And why do they call their computer case a modem?" These are all important questions, but only one of them I am qualified to answer. I still try to answer the other to the best of my knowledge. Unfortunately, the best of my knowledge is very, very, unpleasant.

I used to answer; the reason people make computer viruses is because they have no control in their real life's and compensate by creating their own "control". Now, I just sum the entire answer up with, "because they have small penises." I usually get a knowing nod, and some even reply, is that why there is so much spam on how to enlarge one's penis? Yes. I answer. The government floods the Internet with penis enlargement spam, in an effort to control viruses. I usually close the conversation with, "I'm not an actual mental health professional, but I did stay at a Holliday Inn Express last night." And because no one else seems to have seen this Holliday Inn commercial but me, there is a brief awkward silence, and they walk away thinking what a geek I am...I do it to myself.

In truth, I want to answer; if not for viruses, hackers, and penis enlargement spam, my job would be outsourced to another country.

...oh, and the reason people call their computers a modem is simply because they don't know what to call it. And the reason they think that they need more memory is because they received a hard drive is full error because of their hard drive is full of porn.

Bob: “Writing a computer virus gave me a since of power. It was like casting a spell across the world and everyone that came close to it was affected by my power. People that feel powerless sometimes do very destructive things. It's a helpless feeling to not have any control in your life. Creating viruses gave me something that I had control over, at a time in my life when I felt powerless."

Doug: "So you think that all the viruses being made are from people that feel powerless?"

Bob: "No, not all. I was just speaking for myself. It's easy to see a pattern in what a virus is suppose to do. Vanity viruses are just that; viruses that say "Look at me. I can make you react to my powers." Very seldom do you see a virus intent to destroy. With as much terrorist activity as there is, you would think that the Internet would be teaming with seek and destroy viruses, but that's not what we are seeing at all. Today's viruses are either out to annoy or retrieve data. I think a virus combing the Internet for data is more frightening than viruses that crash hard drives. And where only talking about known viruses. What about viruses that don't make themselves known? What are they doing?"

Very interesting.

Still, I have one more question: How can I behead hackers with mass support and getting no jail sentence for life?

Maybe not beheading, but if you get the US to classify them as net-terrorists, they can then be thrown into Guantanemo. If they were not in uniform when they wrote their code, then torture becomes acceptable.

you could try doing the job with someone else, then very convincingly blame each other.

Hackers, virus writers and spammers (to a lesser degree) are an absolute necessity in the internet world. They ensure that global companies do not obtain a stranglehold on the way people use the internet, they help fight censorship and progenerate the freedom of information, they provide a much needed catalyst for the advancement of new technology and in some cases are even employed by companies to test the limits of their security software. Without them the internet would be a police state with no character. I for one am more than happy to spend a little time and effort keeping my anti-virus and anti-spam software up to date, in return for the benefits that hackers provide on the holostic level.

Ok, so for both of you: Shall I understand that hackers are like Leonardo di Caprio in "Catch me if you can" (that one with Tom Hanks)?

Oh yeah, I will help myself, no probs.

But I ask again: Are hackers people that 'contribute' with their criminal practices to force others to increase security everyday? Are they desirable then?

A lot of them make a considerable amount of money at your expense and inconvenience. Pretty much the same as many commercial operations.

The legality of it is irrelevant.

How do hackers fit into Shavi's communist utopia?
