Trokskyist parties are very splinter-prone. They often consider their particular faction the only true voice and all others to be heretics. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I think there are currently at least a dozen parties in the US calling themselves Trotskyist. In a People ...[text shortened]... into parties. These alliances bring in people who were never in any faction, such as myself.

communists like to sit around and theorize about the imaginary utopia they claim they could createThere's more than a grain of truth in this I'm afraid - far too much far-left politics is inward looking, dominated by sterile debates about theory and programme - ideas which, the more heatedly they are argued over, the less chance they often really have of coming to fruition.
What's made the SWP attractive to so many on the left over the years is that it's always set its face firmly against this kind of politics, taking the view that what matters is the ability to get out and connect with a much wider audience. OK, the SWP may not always have had the success in doing this that it would like, but at least it tries. Socialist Worker is aimed at the man or woman in the street : it doesn't carry debates with other Trotskyist groups. In recent years the SWP's efforts have been instrumental in creating and building campaigns (like the anti war campaign) that have mobilised millions, and the most serious leftist electoral challenge for decades.
