When did 12 inches (I'm talking about NYC, I know they're predicting more in Boston) of snow become a reason for mass panic? When I was a kid, when they were predicting 12 inches of snow, we all celebrated a day off from school and went out to play and made snowmen and snow angels. Maybe I just didn't notice it, but you didn't have the weather men screaming about Armageddon. Maybe it's the weather channel's fault, but this nor'easter is already causing panic if the media is to be believed.

Relax, folks. It's a snowstorm. Stay home if you can and don't do anything stupid and you'll be okay. Geez. "Crippling" "dangerous" "life-threatening" are all words being plastered all over the place on weather.com and other places.

It's snow, folks. not fiery meteorites. It's soft. It's wet. It's basically harmless.

Chill, folks.

It used to be that snow during winter was expected and not really commented on until AFTER it had accumulated enough to top your hunting boots.

Snow forts were a favorite thing, but until you got 6-8" of good packing snow, you could hardly start.

Where we live now, the kids got a "snow" day even though it never snowed.

Still gorgeous in LA - brisk and windy just after a light shower. 😏

We had a snow day about a week ago, when there was barely an inch of accumulation.

While I agree that there is no need to panic (panic never helps in any situation) to make believe that millions of people won't have their next few days majorly effected is to completely ignore a storm's effect. Mass transit could be shut down and (massive delays are inevitable) causing people to have difficulty getting home from work or other activities. Air travel will be similarly effected. On a more local scale, my kids after school activities were cancelled as were their music lessons and basketball league. Other people i know had charity events, birthday party and other weekend activity cancelled.

While these topics are theoretically interesting I will probably never meet anyone who is the target of a drone attack or denied the opportunity to purchase the cake of their choice because of a baker's peculiar morality. I do know many people who still uprooted and still doing construction to fix up damage to their home from the last major storm (Sandy).

12 inches of snow!!! AAAaaaaaagggghhhh!!!!!!

If we get 3 inches of snow in Ireland the whole country shuts down
and goes into hibernation mode. Roads and airports close and there's
news of people injured and stranded and snowed in.
Can't go to school, can't get to work. It's just stupid.

It's high time they got their act together and made plans to deal with it.

My plan is I'm moving to Miami or Hawaii or maybe the Sahara.

Roll on the summer.

Lee Westwood asked about how his game is since moving to Florida, replied that he's got a lot more practice rounds in there than back in England.

That's because snow days are built into school calendars. They build the days in so that they don't have to make up the days at the end of the year. If the days aren't used, then they take the days off and call it a 'snow day'.

This usually means 3 day weekends after springbreak.

The Romans came to Ireland and immediately fled.
They couldn't stand the weather. Always cold and raining.
So they named the country Hibernia which means wintry.

Only hardy men here. Those Roman wusses were not able for
temperatures below glorious Italian summers.

I can't imagine what it must be like actually living with snow. Special tyres, can't get the car out anyway because the garage door's disappeared, kill your back shovelling the stuff off the driveway, then driving on roads which have been salted so that your car turns into a rustbucket. Or doesn't all this stuff that people moan about actually happen?

Are you sure it was the weather, or was it they wanted to get back to watching folks get fed to lions and all the other stuff a decadent washed up society likes.

It all has to do with "global worming". I already started a thread about it.

So that's why they built Hadrian's Wall? To not have to travel any further North?

sh76...it's the same all over anymore. Here in Seattle they have the KIRO "severe weather report", and they have it everyday! Seattle has about 1 day of severe weather every 8 years! It seems hype = ratings = profits. I guess it's OK, but it seems pretty silly to me.😕
