Because the bailout wasn't because of a market freefall. Note the huge freefall came after the bailout was passed. The bailout was because banks weren't as freely lending to each other. We're in a huge liquidity trap. Banks are hording dough as a safety net in case poopoo hits the fan for them even worse than it has.

The freefall started before the bailout.
Now gormless Bush copies Gordon Brown by taking some control of the greedy, incompetent banks that the poor of the US have been forced to hand money over to.

Surely the most disgraceful misuse of public money in the history of mankind.

Bush is the ANTI ROBIN HOOD, stealing from the poor to give to the rich. But hey the libertarians wouldn't want it any other way. I mean, tax the rich to pay for infrastructure that will make the poor less needy and probably go on to be much more productive tax paying members of society as well? What!? You must be crazy!

"No! We couldn't have that! (Assumes voice of crusty old yacht club patron). That sounds too much like communism to me. Heavens forfend! No, we must steal from the poor so that they can appreciate what it means to be rich! We do a great thing here because it preserves the natural order of things. For one we ensure capitalism, and make sure those greedy commie buggers don't lay one finger on our precious hard scrivened, rich man's dough! What next? They will want us to decriminalize the act of taking drugs we made illicit to protect our interests in the tobacco and alcohol industries. Huh! As if we are just going to roll over and let that happen. Must remind myself to have another little chat to Rupert to get his attack dogs to make more of a mess of that candidate who thinks himself enough of an equal of ours to warrant presiding over our nation. The only Libertarian on this site is me as far as I know. I can't believe you're characterizing Libertarians as filthy rich supporters of the bailout.

My Libertarian analysis is that this recession is the natural consequence of all the berserk house building, SUV driving, expensive government programs nonsense (and of course the wars and 9/11). The fools are falling from their exalted position, and there are plenty of hungry, hard working folks out there ready to take the reins of power. Houses and pretty much everything are cheap...if you have cash and/or excellent credit.

This recession could help break down barriers to upward mobility in this country. It's certainly breaking barriers to downward mobility, despite the efforts of the government who's trying to keep barriers in place. I only fear that they'll be keeping the poor down as well as keeping the rich and middle class from falling.

I completely agree with your post, except your description of the ReDumblicans as libertarians.

Well said about the drugs and alcohol/tobacco. Spot on.
