answers the first half of your question, I believe, and as to the second part, Iran's oil is expected to run out by 2035. That means in 35 years Iran will have no energy source, a crushed economy, and no way to advance with no fuel. We do need them for peaceful purposes. What the president says doesn't mean sh*t. They are needed and only going to be used for peaceful purposes.

Let us imagine that the U.S. was completely dependant on oil and it would run out in 30 or so years. Now, you want to make nuclear power to save energy, and to reduce complete dependance on a product likely to run out soon. But Iran comes up and says "You can't do that, you just MIGHT make nuclear power. So America is screwed and dies in 30 years.
