What do you think are the roots of this problem?

A mother invests more resources in a child. Firstly in conception the egg is larger then the sperm. Secondly pregnancy the mother invests more time and resources in the child. Thirdly with breastfeeding she continues to invest more then the father. The mother invests more in the child and so has more to lose if it dies or fails to produce offspring and pass on the genes. The father can just leave it and it stands an ok chance of passing on his genes while he can go off and produce more children.

This is not something you can sort out. It is the way we have evolved.

Perhaps the breakdown of the family, which in turn is encouraged by the breakdown of society.

Perhaps the fact that modern society has made it so easy to avoid taking personal responsibility for the consequences of actions people initiate.

I'll go with that one. I'll also say a lot of "it" is just human nature. Well "manly" nature anyway. Fatherhood is hard work. A lot of people have a problem with that. So they leave it for someone else to do.

The reward is greater than the punishment. Why take care of others when you can simply take care of yourself?
