for that customer will be seen in a worse light due to the
fact that that certification doesn't guarantee a real
electrician.
Thus my being certified as an electrician harmed the
reputation of all other legitimate ones with that same
certification.

mindset to answer this, so to speculate...
The reputation of electricians was harmed because
the bogus electrician is not capable of meeting the
duties required for certification.
Perhaps the anti-gay marriage position is that the reputation of traditional
marriage is harmed because gay couples are not capable of meeting
the duties required under "marriage certification," whatever
those may be, such as raising healthy children or being
pillars of the community.

P.S. After rereading my post, I feel that I have totally dodged
the question through clever wording. I think I am catching
something from ivanhoe. I don't have a real answer I guess.

This is the exact question I could not answer. So I just said... "Bad as I hate to admit it, they can marry if they want. They are still not a breeding couple as nature dictates. If they can live with that? Who am I to rain on the parade?"
