They are supposed to locate you within 500 miles of your family and yes you can request closer and judges do grant it if they want.
If you act up and go crazy they can send you anywhere.

A more reasonable question is what the hell is Darren Sharper doing at Otisville? https://www.theadvocate.com/new_orleans/news/courts/article_38a5fe5c-96a0-11e8-846d-8fd4f06e4179.html

It's his first offense.
You're comparing his sentence to someone else's when that other person had a previous record.
Those life sentences that come from non violent crimes are based on the defendants criminal record.
In the feds every time you get a new charge your time goes up regardless of the charge.
For example...
Steal a car serve some time go home.
R ...[text shortened]... mes but when you look at their record you see why they got the life sentence for non violent crimes.
Okay. Thanks for the info.

Otisville is a medium says the internet.
So the football star might have been a risk at a maximum security prison so he gets sent to a medium.
Famous people will be classified lower for their safety or they requested protective custody and eventually they get sent to a prison where they won't get killed.
Not only that but while you are in maximum security you can take courses and classes and see a psychologist to get help and that will reduce your points over time.

No, he is not; he's being treated like any other federal prisoner. The Bureau of Prisons categorizes prisoners based on different factors (some I already mentioned) and places prisoners based on that determination. Cohen did request Otisville because of its close proximity to New York City, but that is not an unusual request. https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/23/politics/michae ...[text shortened]... at Cohen as harshly as possible so the idea he would get "special treatment" from them is ludicrous.
Okay. If he's being treated equally, that's all you can ask for.

There's two facilities at Otisville:

Cohen arrived just before noon at the complex, where he will be assigned to the 113-inmate satellite camp, apart from medium-security prison that houses another 745 offenders behind tall fences and coils of razor wire.

If Sharper's in the medium security prison, I'm fine with that but the articles aren't clear whether he's there or at the camp.

A satellite camp is like an apartment complex...low rise...no walls.
He could walk away if he wanted too.
Very comfortable as far as prison goes.
Never been to anything like that.

That rapist is at the medium.

That rapist is at the medium.
He could walk away, but then when they caught him, they'd stick him in a much more secure facility.

That's enough disincentive.

I was once in federal court when Ron Kuby (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Kuby) was asking Judge Colleen McMahon to send his client back to minimum security. He had skipped bail and the judge was about to send him to medium security. She told Kuby, "When someone abuses my trust, my first inclination is not trust him again."

Kuby retorted "Well, your honor, the great thing about our justice system is that we're supposed to look beyond our first inclinations" or something to that effect.

Judge McMahon chuckled at Kuby's line...

and then sent his client to medium security.

Ya if you leave a satellite camp you move up in security and they can even hit you with an escape charge that carries an additional 7 years
