The Wreck of the Annenberg
Obama’s first effort at school reform was a total failure that he won’t admit and can’t explain.

By Andrew J. Coulson

Thanks to Bill Ayers, a great many people now know that Barack Obama chaired the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995 to 1999. Ayers, erstwhile member of the 60s’ terrorist group, the Weather Underground, was the driving force in bringing Annenberg’s millions of education reform dollars to Chicago, and he worked with Obama once the project was up and running.

It was inevitable that political hay would be made from this link, but in the process a more fundamental insight has been overlooked: The Chicago Annenberg Challenge was a total failure. And to this day, Senator Obama remains committed to its failed approach.

But instead of being in a position to waste tens of millions of private dollars, as he was then, Obama is now asking voters for the power to waste hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars. Before granting him that power, Americans should understand what went wrong.

Yeah it was a total failure but not for lack of money. The problem is they were trying to do something that was impossible and they can't bring themselves to admit the real (and obvious) reason for it's failure.

I hear a lot of right wingers say that Obama will let Ayers create educational material for the youth of the US now that he is President in the hopes of molding their minds to fit his political ideology. If so, I guess he gave up on bombing his opponents and instead has turned to warping the minds of their children.

That's why Ayers and his wife got into education to begin with.

I'm unfamiliar with the project. What did it aim to do and how did it fail to do so?

"Throwing money at the problem" is a common mistake on both sides of the aisle. Democrats throw money at education and expect it to get better. Republicans throw money at the military and expect it to get better.

As the Annenberg Challenge shows, things only get better when the root causes of problems in the process are addressed. Unfortunately, the usual human approach to problem-solving is:

1. Recognize the most superficial aspects of the problem.
...
3. Raise money to fix the problem.
4. Hand money to self-styled, tirelessly self-promoting "experts" who tell us they can fix the problem.

Missing is step 2: Understanding why we have this problem? What are the basic, sometimes seemingly intractable reasons for this problem?

The reason step 2 is skipped is because a lot of people don't really have a deep interest in solving problems and are not very good at it anyway. Solving problems requires true unbiasedness, patience, an open mind, and inspired creativity. Many people do not have any of these qualities.

What most people ARE interested in is:

1) Talking about money
2) Having control over moving money around
3) Feeling important

Wow the ultimate in politically correct horse manure. So the term "these people" is now racist. What next?

"These people" isn't racist on its own. "These people" before a link giving a video featuring a minority group that you don't like is racist, however. Of course, your link has nothing to do with the topic of the thread either (not many of the people in the vid looked like grammar school students).

No, they're the parents of students. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Can you believe that Cabrini Green is/was only a mile from Michigan Avenue?

According to some in this website, the k-k-kid hates 'nappy heads', 'chinks' and 'spics' (sic), lives in a trailer park, loves guns, and plays a lot of call of duty, which, by the way, has led him to some sort of delusion of a military past (and a belief of actually having contributed something of worth to the US).
